The political war of words between the former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo and his godson, President Goodluck Jonathan was made open to the public when Obasanjo wrote an 18 pages open letter titled BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE on December 2nd 2013 to President Goodluck Jonathan. He had to make this an open letter because the previous letters he has been writing received no response form the President.
The former president who raised controversial allegations against the Goodluck Jonathan administration raging from security, corruption, oil theft, denials on several occasions and also the issue of 2015 general elections.
Jonathan who formally acknowledge his letter recall that all the previous letter are brought to him by hand. The president who with his greatest possible relutance reply the former President Olusegun Obasanjo not for any reason but for the fact that it was an open letter and his side of story must be told.
On the issue of corruption Jonathan said “You will recall that your kinsman, the renowned afro-beat maestro, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti famously sang about it during your first stint as Head of State. Sonny Okosun also sang about corruption. And as you may recall, a number of Army Generals were to be retired because of corruption before the Dimka coup. Also, the late General Murtala Mohammed himself wanted to retire some top people in his cabinet on corruption-related issues before he was assassinated. Even in this Fourth Republic, the Siemens and Halliburton scandals are well known.” Reminding the former president olusegun Obasanjo of how Сorruption sinked into his adminstration right for the very first time he became the Head of State to the extent that the then afro-beat maestro, late Fela Anikulapo Kuti sang about it.
Fomer president Olusegun Obasanjo did not esitate to accuse the present President GEJ of giving presidential assistance for a murderer to evade justice. He said in his words “Presidential assistance for a murderer to evade justice and presidential delegation to welcome him home can only be in bad taste generally but particularly to the family of his victim, assisting criminals to evade justice cannot be part of the job of the presidency. Or, as it is viewed in some quarters, is he being recruited to do for you what he had done for Abacha in the past? Hopefully, he should have learned his lesson. Let us continue to watch”.
Jonathan who find it diffcult to believe the accusation of assisting murders or assigning a presidential delegation to welcome a murderer said that:
“I also find it difficult to believe that you will accuse me of assisting murderers, or assigning a presidential delegation to welcome a murderer. This is a most unconscionable and untrue allegation. It is incumbent on me to remind you that I am fully conscious of the dictates of my responsibilities to God and our dear nation. It is my hope that devious elements will not take advantage of your baseless allegation to engage in brazen and wanton assassination of high profile politicians as before, hiding under the alibi your “open letter” has provided for them”.
He further said that he has directed the securities agencies and requested the National Human Rights Commission to carry out a thorough investigation on these criminal allegations and make their findings public.
In a nut-shell the wise saying that “you don’t wash ur dirty lineing outside the house” does not apply to the former president Olusegun Obasanjo who wrote what he called advice to the president of the federal republic of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan in which all social media was copied. Advice which is supposed to be between you and the person you are giving it to became a public message to the whole world in which every individual made series of comment.
Community Radio broadcasting is not an entirely new form of broadcasting, it is a form of broadcasting that is at the front burner of broadcasting development in the world today. It is an intergrated part of what Prof. Lai Oso former deputy rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic calls community media.
According to Prof. Lai Oso, community broadcasting is a unique form of broadcasting that is targeted at giving a voice to the voiceless section of the society, especially in the rural communities.
Source (Broadcasting Redifined)
The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) recognizes campus broadcasting as a major form of broadcasting in Nigeria and it stipulates conditions for the insurance of campus broadcasting license to any higher institution of learning in the country.
This explains why we have the first campus radio, Unilag 103.1 Fm owned by the University of Lagos and other campus radio stations in Nigeria
Taking Unilag Fm as a case study, it was officially commissioned December 14 2004 by former vice president of Nigeria Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and headed by a co-ordinator according to their following rank, Head of news, Head of programms, producers and reporters. Unlilag fm is therefore the first campus radio station to go on air in 2004 in which there first audience are the students on campus and secondly citizens all over the country.
Based on Unilag Radio credible performance, a standard stage was set for other campuses to receive their licenses, in which as at the last count 27 higher institution in Nigeria have received their licenses so far.
In an exclusive interview with Tayo Takuro the Head of News Unilag Radio, he explained there organisation structure, response of advertisers, challenges community radios are facing, amongst others.
Taking a brief back to the history of unilag Fm, it took the institution over 20years to get the license and another 2 years to put equipment and other necessary things in place.
The law that establishes the station does not allow us to advertise thereby restricting us in some specific areas. The organisation is not a profit making organisation, it is meant to train the students, therefore our focus is not on advert but to train students, although we do a little advert but our focus is not to make money but to impact knowledge.
He further said that as a community radio Unilag fm has achieved it primary aim, being the first campus radio to be granted license by NBC in Nigeria and also with the good examples layed by the institution other higher institutions in Nigeria have also been granted license.
In his words he said “To confirm that the station has achieved its primary purpose we have students who have been trained and employed by other stations such as, Channels, Choice fm, etc. If they are not good, they wouldn’t have been employed by these stations”.
Speaking on the challenges facing community operations, he explained that they have a target audience thereby restricting them from so many areas and since it is not an organisation setup to make profit. Only national issues that affect the people of a state or a local government are allowed. Other areas such as politics or political advert are not allowed since it is more or less a place for training students.
For every community radio there is limited scope of operation because the NBC will tell you the kind of programmes and transmitter you must buy.
Every community radio has to be limited to a set of people, taking a look at a particular community radio he visited in Ghana he shared his experience with us. The radio station was set up within the village premises and deals with issues of the village and every thing that is going on in the community. The community runs the radio station, in which a box is place at the center of the village where every body drops money, letter or opinions on some of their programmes. The language the villagers speak is what they will use to broadcast at the radio station since it is a community radio and is meant for the communuity
The programmes aired on community radio are determine by the community itself. Unilag fm programmes are mostly educational or instructional programmes since it is an higher institution radio where by students learn on daily basis. Examples of programmes include:
- General interest programmes
- Educational programmes
- News and current affairs programmes
- Quiz programmes
- Health programmes
- Sport programmes
- Youth programmes
- Music programmes
- Religious programmes

|The whereabouts of whistleblower Edward Snowden remain unknown. The United States believe that he is in Russia and White House officials are demanding that the former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee be handed over.
The 30-year-old intelligence analyst first sought refuge in Hong Kong and when his departure from there was not blocked, the White House warned of an “unquestionably” negative impact on US-Chinese relations.
The White House believes that the countries said to be on Snowden’s shortlist of destinations undermine his claim to be a champion of transparency, freedom of the press and civil rights.
Snowden has been charged by the US of espionage and spying after revealing to Western newspapers how the US National Security Agency (NSA) spies on the internet and phone activities of millions of people. The programme, named PRISM, was authorised by a secret court.
In a letter sent to Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to Washington, Republican senator Lindsey Graham urged Moscow to ‘apprehend’ and ‘turn over’ Snowden to the US ‘immediately’ if he is still in the country, warning: “The Snowden case is an important test of the ‘reset’ in relations between our two countries. Mr Snowden’s own statements have made clear his guilt. If our two nations are to have a constructive relationship moving forward, Russian cooperation in this matter is essential.”
On Sunday, New York senator Charles Schumer told reporters: “It seems to me that Mr Putin is almost eager to stick a finger in the eye of the United States. In so many different areas he does not cooperate. Very few are the areas in which he does cooperate these days and I think this action, Putin allowing Snowden to land in Russia and then go somewhere else, is going to have serious consequences for US-Russian relationship.”
So, as Washington tries to detain the NSA whistleblower, strains emerge with Russia and China. What are the diplomatic repercussions of tracking down Edward Snowden?
Inside Story Americas, with presenter Shihab Rattansi, is joined by guests: Charles Kupchan, a former US National Security Council official and a professor of international affairs at Georgetown University; Edward Lozansky, the founder and president of the American University in Moscow; and Andrew Weiss, the vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
A Spanish court has declared King Juan Carlos’ youngest daughter Cristina a suspect in alleged tax and money-laundering crimes.
Cristina, 48, has been linked to the business affairs of her husband, former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin, who is under investigation for alleged embezzlement of public funds.
It is believed to be the first time a direct relative of Spain’s king will appear in court as a crime suspect.
Tuesday’s decision by a court in the island of Majorca is a major blow to the prestige of the 76-year-old king, who became head of state after the death in 1975 of General Francisco Franco and helped guide the country’s transition to democracy.
Battling scandal and ill health, Juan Carlos appeared tired as he presided over a military parade while on crutches on Monday in his first public appearance since undergoing an operation to replace his left hip on November 21.
The judge in Palma on Majorca, Jose Castro, said in a written ruling that he had decided to summon Cristina to appear in his court on March 8 as a suspect to testify “about alleged tax and money laundering crimes”.
The investigation could lead to formal charges.
The princess’s defence lawyer, Miguel Roca, said he would appeal the summons.
Castro has been investigating the corruption scandal involving Cristina’s husband since 2010. In summoning Cristina, he overruled opposition by the public prosecutor.
Manos Limpias, a litigious far-right pressure group which the appelation means Clean hands, lodged the case against Cristina alleging tax evasion and money laundering, although tax authorities have not brought any charges and public prosecutors have said there is no case to answer.
Castro has been investigating allegations that Urdangarin and a former business partner embezzled six million euros in public funds via the Noos Institute, a charitable foundation that he chaired.
The blonde-haired Cristina was a member of the board of Noos and with her husband jointly owned another company, Aizoon, which investigators suspect served as a front for laundering embezzled funds.
Castro had summoned Cristina on suspicion of corruption once before, in early 2013, but that decision was overruled following an appeal by the prosecutor.
He then opened a new line of inquiry seeking evidence that Cristina was linked to her husband’s activities, scrutinising her tax declarations and bank accounts for incriminating travel, restaurant or family party expenses.
“Saying ahead of time that Dona Cristina Federica de Borbon did not know of her husband’s activities, and the criminal significance of her own, would be as hasty as declaring inexorably the opposite,” Castro said.
In Spain, civic groups can force prosecutors and judges into action by filing criminal lawsuits known as “people’s accusations”.
Manos Limpias has spurred action on several ongoing corruption cases in Spain, by filing this sort of lawsuit.

Abiodun Ogunjobi, otherwise known as Godogodo, the dreaded one-eyed robbery czar who terrorized Lagos and other South-West states, killing no less than 50 policemen while raiding several banks, businesses and homes, for over 14 years has revealed that he almost quit robbery in 2011.
Godogodo made this disclosure during an interview with news men at the state Police Command headquarters, Ikeja, where he is currently being detained following his arrest by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, led by SP Abba Kyari, on August 1.
Godogodo added that he also travelled to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, to buy clothes whose sales would keep him busy when he is not on his fish farm.
But his dreams got dashed when an operative of SARS, who had been on his trail for long, got an intelligence report on his location and traced him to his mansion.
It was gathered that the operative met a member of one land-owning family, locally known as omo-onile in the area and made him take an oath not to reveal his mission to anyone. But the omo-onile informed Godogodo of the presence of a SARS operative in search of him and he quickly fled Ikorodu and relocated to Ibadan where he built two more mansions. According to a source, “one of our operatives tracking Godogodo received an intelligence report on his location in Ikorodu and stormed the area as an undercover operative. “He met a young man, an omo-onile, in Ikorodu who showed him Godogodo’s house but he was not in. Only his wife was around. “The operative paid the omo-onile to keep watch on Godogodo’s house and report to him whenever he sets his eye on him, but news got to him (Godogodo) that a police undercover operative was in town looking for him. He fled without packing his property.” But Godogodo, speaking to News men said: “In 2008, after I finished building my house in Ikorodu and I setting up a good business for my wife, I went into fish farming. I built about 52 fish ponds and I was making good money from them.
“I usually sell each pond between N600,000 and N800,000 and it took me four months to grow fingerlings into a maturity for sale. The business was moving smoothly and I had over 15 people working for me at the pond.
“While the business was on, I was still going for robberies with members of my gang, but in 2011, I decided to quit. I gave all my rifles, they were nine in number, to my boy, Tosin, who resides at Ajah and I stopped going for robberies. “I only asked them to bring my share of any loot they made from robberies carried out with my rifles. But in June of that year, I travelled to Dubai, where I bought some clothes I intended to sell in Nigeria. When I returned, one omo-onile whom I had assisted in the past (in fact, I gave the guy N200,000 when his wife put to bed through a caesarean section) came to see me. I also gave him some of the clothes I brought from Dubai. He came to me and said a SARS operative had been in town, looking for me.
“The omo-onile explained that the operative dropped a live bullet into a cup of gin and made him swear an oath that he would not reveal his mission to anyone and he should also inform him upon my return.“The moment I heard this, I knew there was trouble and my cover had been compromised, because nobody knew where I lived, including my gang members. I quickly moved out of the house and I went to Ajah to relax before I contacted my wife and asked her to leave the house without picking anything. “We stayed in that hotel for quite some time and I was running out of cash because the guys running my fish ponds were no longer remitting money because they heard that the police were after me.
“At that point I was left with no option than to go back to my gang. After some few bank robberies in Osun and OndoStates, I made huge money which I used to buy the land at Ibadan before I started building on it. But after that,I became more vicious and I made sure that I took part in all major operations within the South-West.”
Meantime, It was gathered that the five AK-47 rifles and 40 fully-loaded magazines recovered from Godogodo, after his return from OgunState, were found in Ayobo area by the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island. The recovery has brought the total number of rifles recovered from the notorious bandit to 28. According to the source, three of the rifles were found in a Nissan Primera car parked in the premises of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Adeniji Adele. Sources disclosed to Vanguard that the vehicle was parked at the Federal Special Anti-Robber Squad, Adeniji Adele for over three years and was not properly searched after it was transferred from Ifo Police Station in Ogun State, when they ransacked one of Godogodo’s mansions in OgunState.
The two other AK-47 rifles and 15 loaded magazines were recovered from Ayobo area of Lagos where they were buried. However, the discovery of three AK-47 rifles which belonged to three police officers attached to Mopol 16 in Abekuta, Ogun State, who were killed by Godogodo and his gang members when they were ambushed, at the Federal Special Anti-Robber Squad, Adeniji Adele sent the unit into disarray.
The Holy Father again has shown his deep compassion and love for the sick at his weekly audience in St Peter’s Square. Showing no hesitance and displaying the living out of the Beatitudes that characterizes his Petrine ministry, Pope Francis embraced, kissed, and blessed a man with severe facial deformities. Pope Francis, while speaking with the man, gestured toward the sky in a private moment, in the midst of a crowded square. The name of the man and the cause of his disfigurement are unknown
The scene was reminiscent of another encounter the Holy Father had with a man disfigured by neurofibromatosis in St. Peter’s Square a few weeks ago that got international attention.
While it is certainly not a novel approach for the successors of St. Peter to care for and personally comfort the sick, disfigured, and poor, Pope Francis relationship with these people is sparking worldwide interest from both secular and religious media outlets in a way perhaps not seen before in the modern world.
